âTheyâre going to release the body,â Arthur told Granny as soon as she came through the door. âThe police have been around, told Stan he can start to make the funeral arrangements.â
âWell thatâs something at least,â she smiled to herself, satisfied that the discovery of the murder weapon had given the police a change of heart surrounding Stanâs involvement in his wifeâs murder. The fact that they have finally released the body must indicate that, surely.
âAt least Stan can put her to rest,â Arthur said. âItâs only then that he can truly start to rebuild his life.â
âYes,â Granny nodded, preoccupied. âWhere is Stan?â she had expected to find him here. At the moment he didnât seem comfortable in his own home which was understandable.â
âHeâs gone to stay with his sister in Ponty until the funeral,â Arthur said. âThe police were very helpful and arranged for a car to take him over.â
âThatâs good,â Granny said, thinking it was the least the police could do.
âWant a cup of tea?â Arthur asked and turned for the kitchen.
âNo,â Granny stopped him in his tracks. âIâm not staying. Iâm going back out.â
âYou just got in.â
âI need my bicycle,â Granny said. âAny my phone.â
âWell, where are you going?â
âI canât tell you. Not yet but I want you to do something for me.â Granny went into the kitchen and grabbed her phone from the table. She examined it and found that she had fourteen missed calls. Still, couldnât be important, she thought and she cleared the screen and popped the phone into the pocket of her body warmer.
Arthur sighed. All these years of marriage, he thought and still he couldnât understand or predict anything his wife did.
He followed her into the kitchen.
âGo on then,â Arthur said, feeling he was going to regret it.
âI want you to arrange a house meeting,â Granny said. âHere at six tonight but only certain people to come.â
âA meeting about what?â
âIâll explain later,â Granny said. Sheâd already worked all this out in her mind on the way home from Sheilaâs and sheâd decided that six people would be enough.
âI wish you would,â Arthur grumbled.
âMake sure Gerald and Leanne are here. And rope in Maud and Mr Patel, together with us two that makes six. Six should be enough.â
âFor what?â
âIâll explain at the meeting.â
âI canât just drag everyone around her with no explanation.â
âJust tell them.â
âAnd what do I tell them?â
âTell them anything,â Granny said. âIâll explain it all later. Now Iâve got to go if Iâm to be back in time.â
Arthur said nothing and watched as his wife disappeared out back in search of her bicycle.
